The Anti-Rape Crisis Cell (ARCC), is a transformative initiative designed to expedite justice and support survivors of sexual violence. The Model ARCC was inaugurated today at the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Khyber Medical College (KMC), Peshawar. Established through the collaboration of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Legal Aid Society (LAS), the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) government, and Khyber Medical College (KMC), this model ARCC underscores the urgency of coordinated, survivor-centric approaches to addressing sexual violence. The event commenced with opening remarks by Ms. Durkhanay Ijaz senior manager in LAS, who highlighted that The Peshawar ARCC is the third of its kind nationwide, following those in Karachi (JPMC) and Islamabad (PIMS). By providing medico-legal, police, and legal assistance under one roof, the ARCC minimizes delays and creates a supportive environment for survivors. This initiative is part of the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Act, 2021, which aims to ensure timely and fair justice for survivors. Followed by Dr. Rubina Ali, (Assistant Country Representative, UNFPA), reinforced the importance of such collaborative efforts. Prof. Dr. Mahmud Aurangzeb (Dean of Khyber Medical College and Khyber Teaching Hospital), emphasized the hospital’s commitment to providing comprehensive support for survivors. Dr. Hakim Afridi, (Dean of the Forensic Department), emphasized the importance of expanding the ARCC model to divisional levels, making services more accessible to survivors across the province. In Pakistan, where incidents of sexual violence remain a serious concern, the ARCCs serve as crucial hubs for immediate support and long-term rehabilitation Dr. Abdul Waheed, Director General of the Provincial Health Services Academy, highlighted the significant role of health services in survivor care. He spoke on the importance of equipping healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills to deliver critical support in cases of sexual violence. The ceremony concluded with closing remarks by Justice Arif Hussain Khilji, retired Supreme Court justice and Chief Legal Advisor of LAS, who reiterated the importance of unified efforts in addressing sexual violence and fostering a culture of accountability. The launch of this ARCC is an important step toward fostering a safer society.
