Churails’ director Asim Abbasi talks about male film-makers diving into women-oriented subjects

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Asim Abbasi’s highly anticipated first Zindagi original – ‘Churails’ trailer has garnered exceptional response and piqued the interest of the audience with its unique and strong female characters and empowering storyline. In an interview, writer and director Asim Abbasi shared his thoughts on exploring women-oriented subjects as a male film-maker.
When asked about his take on the irony that most of these female-centric shows are made by male filmmakers, he replied, “Well, it is a fact that there are more men in this space. Although, I wish more shows like Churails are made by women, they are definitely better positioned to narrate a show like Churails. The least we can do is tell their stories however well we can. I do not live in a woman’s body, I might be surrounded by them and I might see what is happening but, I am not first-hand experiencing what is happening. To compensate for that, I had a lot of women working with me on this show, I tried to surround myself with as many women as possible.”
The series has an unconventional storyline that portrays the twisted tale of four self-proclaimed “Churails” determined to break the patriarchal shackles of society. It pronounces empowerment for women in the real world by showcasing a twisted and thrilling story of these self-proclaimed Churails. The show is led by a supremely talented cast including Sarwat Gilani, Mehar Bano, Yasra Rizvi, and Nimra Bucha, which will stream online 11th August onwards on Zee5.
